How Side Projects Enhance Our Working Methods and Development

It is always something special when people come together to work towards a common goal. Our ability to unite as individuals and bring groundbreaking ideas to life is at the heart of my work. The motto “Never stop evolving. Stay human.” accompanies me and my projects through every challenge, every milestone, and beyond.

In recent years, I have had the pleasure of working on some side projects with various partners. Side projects are self-initiated endeavors driven without official mandates, often alongside regular entrepreneurial activities, when a need is recognized.

Some of these ideas have fallen by the wayside, another was awarded multiple time (Initiative Meine.Deine.Gartenzeit), and others are in development. Yet, regardless of the outcome, each of these projects is filled with endless inspiration and insightful experiences. The diversity of topics and shared experiences are marked by constructive curiosity and creative freedom – once this wonderful development space opens, even the unthinkable becomes possible.
This principle is particularly reflected in my collaboration on an extraordinary side project with Petra Helmel (Kukutch CEO). Our joint project, which we have been working on for some time now, began with a clear vision: to implement an idea that supports both individuals and organizations in their development and promotes the common good. Due to countless learnings, we adjusted our perspective on the project shortly before completion and took the liberty of turning everything upside down.

Why? Here’s why:

Complexity and Its Challenges

With each new feature we envisioned to be beneficial, and every additional function we integrated, our project became increasingly complicated. Although all these aspects are essential and important, we had to admit that the density of requirements made us lose sight of our original goal. What was intended as a simple and intuitive solution developed into a complex construct that made orientation and clarity impossible. This realization was not easy for us and was a crucial turning point.

The Freedom to Rethink

What is often neglected in the daily lives of many people and organizations, we have deliberately brought into focus. Instead of letting ourselves be discouraged or “just pushing through,” we used the challenge as an opportunity: to critically examine every aspect of our idea and experiment with additional concepts. We allowed ourselves to completely overturn previous insights and rethink everything from the ground up. In this process, it was essential to completely detach from previous notions, consider the complexity of our time, and have the courage to accept simplification as the key. The latter was the greatest challenge: to distill the essence of the essence.

The Essence of Our Collaboration

“Teamwork makes the dream work” aptly summarizes the persistent effort Petra Helmel and I have put into realizing our idea. Through our determination, shared interest, and inspiring collaboration, our side project, which nearly succumbed to its complexity, has regained significant momentum. We are curious to see where this will lead us. But one thing is clear: Through our countless learnings and unwavering mutual motivation, we remain steadfast as a collaborative team – and this strengthens the likelihood of possibly giving wings to our side project soon.

In this spirit: To the upcoming challenges and the numerous opportunities just waiting to be seized.
